How to Remove Grease Stains

How many times does your child come home from school with grease stains down the side of his or her pants because they couldn’t find a napkin after eating some yummy french fries? Or the stain down the front of a shirt from a French fry that took a tumble? By their nature, grease stains are typically not discovered when they are fresh. However, they are still definitely stains that you want to treat, wash, and NOT place in the dryer until you are sure the stain has been removed. Purex® shares how to remove grease stains from clothing and fabrics.

How To Treat Grease Stains

There are a few options when it comes to tackling a greasy stain. A more non-traditional way to remove a grease stain would be to use some dishwashing detergent. Apply a little bit to the stain and gently rub. Do not use a lot of dishwashing detergent with your laundry as it foams significantly more than laundry detergent and can cause issues in your machine.

Pre-Treat the Grease Stain with Laundry Detergent

Another way to pre-treat grease stains is with a powerful liquid detergent such as Purex® Advanced Oxi + Coldwater Power. This liquid detergent is a powerful cleaning detergent that removes tough stains. We recommend this detergent because it's an enzyme-based detergent which are great for killing protein-based stains. Pour a little Purex® Advanced Oxi + Coldwater Power detergent onto the stain, rub the stained fabric together and let sit for five minutes before putting in the washer and then launder the item as usual.

Launder the Grease Stain as Usual

After pre-treating the grease stain, launder the item with either Purex® liquid detergent or Purex® Pacs. When your washing machine is done with its cycle, check the grease stain to make sure the stain has been removed. If it has not, repeat the stain removing procedure above. Do not place the article in the dryer until you are happy with the stain removal results as that could make the grease stain set.

Follow the Care Instructions of the Clothing or Fabric

As always, follow the washing directions listed on the tag of the clothing. If you are unsure of the effects of a stain treating method, apply a little to the inside hem to see if there is an impact on the appearance of your clothing item.
