Homemade Valentines Day Gift Ideas

By Purex | Feb. 4, 2014 | Family Life

Valentine’s Day is always a fun holiday for families, and kids love to share cards with their classmates. Giving someone a gift you make is so much more significant than any store-bought gift. The fact that you make it speaks to your feelings for the recipient, and what begins as an idea to make a Valentine’s Day gift may become a tradition filled with some of your family’s most cherished memories.

Create Hand Painted Valentine’s Day Gift Bags

Use muslin gift bags as a fun and unique way to pack homemade treats. Involve your kids in this project and let them take cookies or special Valentine’s Day candies to their classmates.

What You’ll Need:

  • A craft knife or punch
  • Freezer paper
  • An iron
  • A stencil brush
  • Craft paint
  • Scraps of cardboard
  • Muslin gift bags

Step 1: If you have a craft punch, that’s the easiest way to make your stencil. Use it to create a single heart, a heart pattern (with several hearts,) or anything you want.

Step 2: Using your iron, place the stencil on the muslin bag, making sure the shiny side faces down. Iron the freezer paper so that it is completely flat and in place on the gift bag.

Step 3: Place one cardboard scrap inside the bag. Using a stencil brush, dab paint on the muslin painting the areas you cut out with your craft punch. After painting, carefully remove the stencil. Be sure you remove the stencil when the paint is still wet. Leave the cardboard scrap inside the bag until the paint is completely dry.

Create Homemade Felt Heart Bookmarks

Make reading a bit more special by giving the book lovers in your family a homemade red heart bookmark made of felt. It’s something that your loved one can use anytime, not just on Valentine’s Day. A fun and practical gift that shows your understanding of activities the recipient enjoys will make it that much more special.

What You’ll Need:

  • Pinking shears
  • Red felt
  • Cream-colored felt
  • Heavy-red embroidery floss
  • Embroidery needles
  • Disappearing ink
  • Marking pen
  • Ruler
  • Fabric glue

Step 1: Cut a rectangle out of the cream-colored felt. Then turn the felt over and draw a heart on the back of it. Cut the heart out. Set the cream-colored felt aside.

Step 2: Lay the cream-colored felt on a piece of dark red felt. Trace a rectangle, leaving enough extra room to cut a border with pinking shears.

Step 3: Glue the cream-colored felt on the dark red felt.

Step 4: Cut a long piece of embroidery thread. Thread a needle with it and put the needle the center of the top of the bookmark, creating a loop, sending the needle back up so there is a big loop at the top of the book mark. Tie a knot and leave enough extra thread that you can create a decorative tassel at the very top of the bookmark.

For a different style bookmark, you can put a heart on cream-colored felt.

Step 1: Cut a rectangle out of the cream-colored felt.

Step 2: Draw the outline of a heart on a piece of bright red felt. Cut the heart out and set it aside.

Step 3: Using the disappearing ink, draw marks to follow when you sew stitches along the length of the bookmark. Thread a needle with bright red embroidery thread. Sew stitches up the entire length of the bookmark.

Step 4: At the top of the bookmark, loop the thread through and bring the extra thread to create a large loop. Tie a knot, and then cut the thread, making sure that the individual strands form a large tassel.

Step 5: Dab glue around the edges of the bright red heart. Place the red heart on the center of the cream-colored bookmark.Once the glue on the bookmarks dries, you can give one or both to your recipient.

By making your Valentine’s Day gifts, you’re giving the people you love, a very personal expression of your love and affection.
